Charging “Tutor Time”

September 23rd, 2008 by admin

Question:
The FBO that I am now training out of charges an additional .4 hours of
instructor time for
each flight on top of what is on the Hobbs. A 1 hour flight costs 1 hour of
plane rental, plus
1.4 hours of instructor time. The rationale is that it is brief and debrief
time. They say that everyone does that now. I’d like to find out if this is the
norm. Can anybody comment?

Answer:
I think adding a constant “debrief” number is pretty arbitrary. The school I flew
out of let the instructor add in how much additional time he actually spent with the
student. Some days he’d add .3, others he’d let me off with the tach time (when
I did the preflight and all and all he did was fill out my log book, not much post flight
instruction).

I make sure that my students get every second of time that I charge them
for. However, if a student is late and is going to make me stand around
while he preflights the plane and gets ready to fly, I am going to charge
him whether I am actively instructing him or not. Conversely, if I am late
and make the student waits around, the student gets it made up in free
instruction time. It is only fair.

Tutoring Elementary Aged Children…

September 23rd, 2008 by admin

Question:
I took a job tutoring homebound/hospitalized students this year. I
normally work with middle/high school students, and had said this was
the age range I wanted for the tutoring… But the supervisor called me
and asked if I would take a “special case”.
any idea how to figure out what his interests are? I
know I can ask him, but I want to try and have something to jump off
with. I’ll be tutoring him in his house… he can’t go many places. I
wish I could tutor him at the library one day a week, but that is too
risky for him right now. He lives in the County, so we could check
out books for him that way.
I am not sure what materials I’ll have access to… and I’m not looking
to spend as much or anywhere close on this one child as I would on my
classroom! I do want to do some cooking and art projects with him,
because those are standard pre-K/K curriculum methods… and I hate
worksheets anyway.

Answer:
You can use The Little Engine the Could for this, perhaps.
Make some cutouts of big, medium and small train engines
and sort by size. Make a train with cars of different colors
and sort by color or by the car’s shapes and functions.
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton
. could work too - he could sort pictures of different kinds of
construction machines in lots of different ways.

Geometry homework??

September 23rd, 2008 by admin

Question:
the teacher didn’t exactly explain it very well and its due 2morro, plz dont tell me 2 ask 4 help and just help me with my math sheet! my parents don’t get this stuff at all and i’m in the gifted program and i really don’t wanna use the phone, ok, when finding surface area of prisms, how do u know which angles 2 multiply? i have the formula and everything but i’m just confused about the angles

Answer:
Don’t multiply angles. Multiply dimensions.

Suppose the rectangular prism has dimensions a, b, and c

There are two sides that have area a x b, 2 sides having area b x c, and 2 sides having area a x c. So the total surface area is 2ab + 2bc + 2 ac or 2(ab + bc + ac)

Looking for on-line tutor SQL

September 22nd, 2008 by admin

Question:
I need to become familiar with why SQL is important. Looking for audio tapes
I can listen to while stuck in traffic and some online coaching, tutoring or
school. I’m writing training material for ERP software now running on UNIX
but future development will be in Microsoft platform. Any ideas?

Answer:
SQL Tutor is the quickest and easiest way to get hands-on experience with
the structured query language (”SQL”). SQL is the defacto industry
standard for querying databases from Access to SQL Server, Oracle and
DB2. This program will provide you an online tool that will help you work
with the Microsoft Jet database standard *.mdb file formats supported by
Access. The program not only shows you how to write and execute SQL
queries but it also provides an immediate display of the modified
recordset in familiar grid format.

Until now, the alternative to SQL Tutor has been Access SQL Server, Power
Builder or other SQL databases or database front ends. And often, these
high end databases include SQL functionality, but are not ideally suited
for the beginning student. SQL Tutor meets this need for an economical
(SRP $25.00) SQL learning tool.

Online tutoring on the rise

September 21st, 2008 by admin

Question:
Most of the schools here offer in-house tutorials before
& after school and they are usually ‘free’. Our student council
this year put together a peer-tutoring program that was
available 2-3 time a week after-school. I heard that a number of
students took advantage of it - least for awhile. Seemed some of
the students went expecting the ‘tutors’ to do their homework
for them.

Which teacher? - the teacher that is doing the tutoring or the
student’s regular classroom teacher? How much time does your
program allow for motivating individual students and is that
part of the $10 an hour? Are you not aware of sylvan, kumon and
score ?

Answer:
Many of the student who tend to need tutoring (leastwise here
abouts) tend not to think about the future - if most of them did
more of that they might not be in the need for tutoring.

I’d be somewhat worried that there might be some communication
problems between student & tutor with them being in two
different countries. A lot of the students here (where I’m at)
that could use tutoring the most are also the ones that
primarily speak spanish and are not all that fluent in english -
which is sometimes the reason that they are behind in the class
as there is a real communication problem between student and
teacher.

Teen Homework Help

September 21st, 2008 by admin

Question:
How does music help kids and teens with there homework at home or at shcool?
my princpal won’t allow us students or teaschers to have our i-pods or mp-3 players or cd-players any more in school, and i want to tell him that it helps us concerate while we work on our work as long as it does not distract any other students or teachers.
Can anyone in the group help me?

Answer:
actually you know what it depends on the music. If it is calm then yes it will help focus. But classical music helps a lot. My counseling teacher said so herself. She said that the music calms you down and you are more focused on your work. I know classical music is boring, but I happened to like it cuz I did Ballet and it is great it really works. Find statistics and make a deal with your Principal. Say classical music will help us more

Online Chemistry Tutor

September 20th, 2008 by admin

Question:
I need to know what the trends (both physically and chemically) are between
elements in the third period of the table.
These are the elements Na-Ar. Reply ASAP,
Katrina, chem student.
Know any good online chemistry tutors anyone??

Answer:
When somebody spouts rhetoric about empowerment, rights, ablements…
you now have the prospective to wonder about knowledge-based pursuits.
NOBODY ever manufactured a lightbulb from dialectic and critique.

“Advanced Inorganic Chemistry” Cotton and Wilkinson, probably at a university
chemistry library. The truth is out there. It is large, complex, and beautiful.
you should probably ask some more specific questions. Anything
even remotely approaching a complete simple answer to the question as
asked would take up many chapters in a text like Cotton and Wilkinson.
Or perhpas you should get a copy of a descriptive inorganic chemistry
textbook (just about any high school chemistry text will have at least a
rudimentary section) and look it up yourself.
